RIBBLE EXHIBITION CENTRE - LEYLAND - 01772 422041 |

The restored 16th century Grammar
School is now a museum reflecting the borough's history
and the venue for a monthly exhibitions programme.
A short distance from Worden Park you will find South
Ribble Museum and Exhibition Centre, housed in the restored
16th century Grammar School. The Leyland Free Grammar
School was one of the earliest in the county and dates
from 1524. Much of the present building dates from c.1580
and is a fine example of the local timber framed construction
technique. Though the school closed in 1876 after over
300 years the building continues to preserve a vivid picture
of life in times past with displays reflecting the borough's
archaeology and its industrial and social history.

BRICKCROFT - LONGTON - 01772 611497 |
 |
 |
The Wetland Nature Reserve covers
over 11 hectares (27 acres), and has a visitors centre,
picnic area and free car park.
North west of Leyland lies the village of Longton,
the location of Longton Brickcroft Nature Reserve, a 27-acre
site of local conservation importance managed as a wetland
nature reserve on the site of the former Bentley Brick
works. Clay was excavated at the site to make bricks but
when good quality clay ran out in the early 1960s brick
making ceased and the site became derelict. |
During the 1980s 11 hectares of the site was set aside for
public open space and nature conservation and a programme
of active reserve management ensures that the character and
diversity of the Brickcroft are maintained today. The visitor
centre, opened in May 1993, contains informative displays
on the site's history, local wildlife and environment. (The
Visitor Centre is open each afternoon April to October - Tuesday
to Sunday and November to March - Wednesday to Sunday and
Bank Holidays other than Christmas Day)
